The Name

© Caroline Norton

THY name was once the magic spell, by which my thoughts were bound,
And burning dreams of light and love were wakened by that sound;
My heart beat quick when stranger tongues, with idle praise or blame,
Awoke its deepest thrill of life, to tremble at that name.

Kennack Sands

© Robert Laurence Binyon

On Kennack Sands the sun
Shines, and the fresh wind blows,
Moulding pale banks anew,
Where the sea--holly grows.

Dreaming Of Li Bai (2)

One thousand autumns, ten thousand years of fame,
are nothing after death.

HE said, and wept; then spread his sails before

The winds, and reach’d at length the Cumæan shore:

The Little Old Woman

© Katharine Tynan

There's a Little Old Woman walks in the night,
  Singing her love song like a falling keen;
The Little Old Woman is the heart's delight,
  With the gold crown under her hood to tell her queen.

South-West Wind In The Woodland

The silence of preluded song -

AEolian silence charms the woods;

Haec Olim Meminisse

© Madison Julius Cawein

FEBRILE perfumes as of faded roses
In the old house speak of love to-day,
Love long past; and where the soft day closes,
Down the west gleams, golden-red, a ray.

At Long Last

© Ada Cambridge

Late, late, the prize is drawn, the goal attained,
The Heart's Desire fulfilled, Love's guerdon gained.
Wealth's use is past, Fame's crown of laurel mocks
The downward-drooping head and grizzled locks.
The end is reached-the end of toil and strife-
The end of life.

Phantom Or Fact? A Dialogue In Verse

© Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Friend.
This riddling Tale, to what does it belong?
Is't History? Vision? or an idle Song?
Or rather say at once, within what space
Of Time this wild disastrous change took place?

Clouds Of The Autumn Night

© Madison Julius Cawein

Clouds of the autumn night,
  Under the hunter's moon,--
Ghostly and windy white,--
  Whither, like leaves wild strewn,
Take ye your stormy flight?

Beyond the Sea

© Thomas Love Peacock

Beyond the sea, beyond the sea,
My heart is gone, far, far from me;
And ever on its track will flee
My thoughts, my dreams, beyond the sea.

The Sense Of Your Bidding

© Mikhail Alekseevich Kuzmin

The sense of your bidding is unclear:
to pray, to curse, is it, to fight
you bid me, inscrutable genius?
The spring slackens, niggard, meager,
and Benozzo Gozzoli's courier
dozes in the drowsy thickets.

The Lady Of La Garaye - Part III

© Caroline Norton

And either tries to hide the thoughts that wring
Their secret hearts; and both essay to bring
Some happy topic, some yet lingering dream,
Which they with cheerful words shall make their theme;
But fail,--and in their wistful eyes confess
All their words never own of hopelessness.

Apes And Ivory

© Alfred Noyes

Apes and ivory, skulls and roses, in junks of old Hong-Kong,
  Gliding over a sea of dreams to a haunted shore of song,
  Masts of gold and sails of satin, shimmering out of the East,
  O, Love has little need of you now to make his heart a feast.

Aforetime

© Thomas Sturge Moore

Thou findest parables;
With fond imagination
Adorning truth
For the successive
Unpersuaded
Generations.

En Tout Cas

© Edith Nesbit

WHEN I am glad I need your eyes
To be the stars of Paradise;
Your lips to be the seal of all
The joy life grants, and dreams recall;
Your hand, to lie my hands between
What time we walk the garden green.

Fifth Sunday After Easter - Rogation Sunday

© John Keble

Now is there solemn pause in earth and heaven;
 The Conqueror now
 His bonds hath riven,
And Angels wonder why He stays below:
  Yet hath not man his lesson learned,
  How endless love should be returned.
