Movement, the, the term applied since 1954 to a loose group of English poets whose work subsequently appeared in the anthology New Lines (1956) edited by Robert Conquest. Their common ground was limited to an avoidance of romantic postures in favour of ironic detachment, a reaction against the excesses of modernism, and a cultivation of poetry as a disciplined craft.
