His first infidelity was a mistake, but not as big
As her false pregnancy. Later, the boy found outHe was born three months earlier than the date

The Accompanist by Dick Allen: American Life in Poetry #188 Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate 2004-200

© Ted Kooser

I really like this poem by Dick Allen, partially for the way he so easily draws us in, with his easygoing, conversational style, but also for noticing what he has noticed, the overlooked accompanist there on the stage, in the shadow of the singer.

I'm a very average person,
and I think most people are.
I vote with the common man.
I have two kids, a boy and a girl.

The Cities Of The Plain

© John Greenleaf Whittier

"Get ye up from the wrath of God's terrible day!
Ungirded, unsandalled, arise and away!
'T is the vintage of blood, 't is the fulness of time,
And vengeance shall gather the harvest of crime!"

Hermann And Dorothea - IV. Euterpe

© Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"Mother," he said in confusion:--"You greatly surprise me!" and quickly
Wiped he away his tears, the noble and sensitive youngster.
"What! You are weeping, my son?" the startled mother continued
"That is indeed unlike you! I never before saw you crying!
Say, what has sadden'd your heart? What drives you to sit here all lonely
Under the shade of the pear-tree? What is it that makes you unhappy?"

Venus' Runaway

© Benjamin Jonson

Beauties, have ye seen this toy,
Called Love, a little boy,
Almost naked, wanton, blind;
Cruel now, and then as kind?
If he be amongst ye, say?
He is Venus' runaway.

When A Woman Loves A Man

© David Lehman

When she says Margarita she means Daiquiri.
When she says quixotic she means mercurial.
And when she says, "I'll never speak to you again,"
she means, "Put your arms around me from behind
as I stand disconsolate at the window."

Now when people say ah but

I say of course it is what else is it
She's my child I have brought her up
Told her stories wept at losses
Laughed at her pleasures she is mine.
