Retrospect: The Jests Of The Clock

© Robert Graves

He had met hours of the clock he never guessed before-
Dumb, dragging, mirthless hours confused with dreams and fear,
Bone-chilling, hungry hours when the Gods sleep and snore,
Bequeathing earth and heaven to ghosts, and will not hear,
And will not hear man groan chained to the sodden ground,
Rotting alive; in feather beds they slumbered sound.

Rhyme For A Phonetician

Brave English language, you are strong as trees,

Yet intricate and stately. Thus one sees

Repining

© Christina Georgina Rossetti

She sat alway thro' the long day
Spinning the weary thread away;
And ever said in undertone:
'Come, that I be no more alone.'

Renewed

© Paul Hamilton Hayne

WELCOME, rippling sunshine!
Welcome, joyous air!
Like a demon shadow
Flies the gaunt despair!

You have given me riches and ease,

You have given me joys through the years,

HERE writ was the World's History by his hand

Whose steps knew all the earth; albeit his world

Requiem

© Robert Fuller Murray

For thee the birds shall never sing again,
Nor fresh green leaves come out upon the tree,
The brook shall no more murmur the refrain
  For thee.

Rubaiyat 22

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

I needed to hang on to her curly ring,
Help me please, let my affairs take wing.
Said, release my hair, instead take my lips,
Let go of long life, with good times swing.

Rubaiyat 37

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

Let not your thoughts constantly be fought,
Let thoughts in patience and joy be caught.
What patience? Cause what they call the heart
Is a drop of blood, and a thousand thought.

Rubaiyat 27

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

The morning breeze tended to the rose,
A maid-in-waiting, as the flower grows.
If in the sun you have a shady refuge,
Seek the shade of a rose, and one who glows.

Rubaiyat 12

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

All treasures ain’t worth this oppression.
All pleasures ain’t worth one transgression.
Not even seven thousand years of joy
Is worth seven days of depression.

Roll On Time, Roll On

© Julia A Moore

Roll on time, roll on, as it always has done,
 Since the time this world first begun;
It can never change my love that I gave a dear man,
Faithful friend, I gave my heart and hand.

Reality

© Emma Lazarus

These things alone endure;
"They are the solid facts," that we may grasp,
Leading us on and upward if we clasp
And hold them firm and sure.

Requiem

© Edith Nesbit

NOW veiled in the inviolable past
  Love lies asleep, who never more will wake;
Nor would you wake him, even for my sake
Who for your sake pray he sleep sound at last.

Rubaiyat 15

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

Spend time with wine by a stream,
And let sorrows away stream.
My life, like a rose, is but few days;
Youthful and joyous live this dream.

Rus' You Are But A Kiss In The Frost

Rus', you are but a kiss in the frost!

The midnight roads are blueing.

Rubaiyat 34

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

Your eyes enrapture, and colors pour,
Alas, your love’s arrows score.
Too soon you gave up on the lovers,
Alas, your heart has rocks in store.

Roses And Pearls

© Paul Laurence Dunbar

YOUR spoken words are roses fine and sweet,

The songs you sing are perfect pearls of sound.

Rubaiyat 11

© Shams al-Din Hafiz

First enticed me to take the cup,
When I got drunk, told me to stop.
My eyes watery, my heart on fire,
I became dust and your wind picked me up.

Si al mecer las azules campanillas
  De tu balcon,
Crees que suspirando pasa el viento
  Murmurador,
Sabe que, oculto entre las verdes hojas,
  Suspiro yo.
