To Gordon Leaving Khartoum

© George MacDonald

The silence of traitorous feet!
The silence of close-pent rage!
The roar, and the sudden heart-beat!
And the shot through the true heart going,
The truest heart of the age!
And the Nile serenely flowing!

Saint Brandan, a Scotch abbot, long ago
Sailed southward with a swarm of monks, to sow

Youth that trafficked long with Death,

The Dream of Eugene Aram

© Thomas Hood

'Twas in the prime of summer-time

There were some that ran and some that leapt,
Like troutlets in a pool.

The Death Bed

We watch'd her breathing thro' the night,
Her breathing soft and low,
As in her breast the wave of life
Kept heaving to and fro.

The Bridge of Sighs

So primal germs have solid singleness
Nor otherwise could they have been conserved
Through aeons and infinity of time
For the replenishment of wasted worlds.

Silence

© Thomas Hood

There is a silence where hath been no sound,
There is a silence where no sound may be,
In the cold grave—under the deep, deep sea,
Or in wide desert where no life is found,

The Other Woman

© Madison Julius Cawein

You have shut me out from your tears and grief
Over the man laid low and hoary.
Listen to me now: I am no thief!--
You have shut me out from your tears and grief,--
Listen to me, I will tell my story.

Ben Battle was a soldier bold,
And used to war's alarms;
But a cannon-ball took off his legs,
So he laid down his arms.
