© Emily Dickinson
I saw the wind within her
I knew it blew for me --
But she must buy my shelter
I asked Humility
I saw that the Flake was on it
© Emily Dickinson
I saw that the Flake was on it
But plotted with Time to dispute --
"Unchanged" I urged with a candor
That cost me my honest Heart --
I saw no Way -- The Heavens were stitched
© Emily Dickinson
I saw no Way -- The Heavens were stitched --
I felt the Columns close --
The Earth reversed her Hemispheres --
I touched the Universe --
I rose -- because He sank --
© Emily Dickinson
I rose -- because He sank --
I thought it would be opposite --
But when his power dropped --
My Soul grew straight.
I reckon -- when I count it all --
© Emily Dickinson
I reckon -- when I count it all --
First -- Poets -- Then the Sun --
Then Summer -- Then the Heaven of God --
And then -- the List is done --
I read my sentence -- steadily
© Emily Dickinson
I read my sentence -- steadily --
Reviewed it with my eyes,
To see that I made no mistake
In its extremest clause --
I prayed, at first, a little Girl,
© Emily Dickinson
I prayed, at first, a little Girl,
Because they told me to --
But stopped, when qualified to guess
How prayer would feel -- to me --
I play at Riches -- to appease
© Emily Dickinson
I play at Riches -- to appease
The Clamoring for Gold --
It kept me from a Thief, I think,
For often, overbold
I pay -- in Satin Cash
© Emily Dickinson
I pay -- in Satin Cash --
You did not state -- your price --
A Petal, for a Paragraph
It near as I can guess --
I noticed People disappeared
© Emily Dickinson
I noticed People disappeared
When but a little child --
Supposed they visited remote
Or settled Regions wild --
But did because they died
A Fact withheld the little child --
I never hear that one is dead
© Emily Dickinson
I never hear that one is dead
Without the chance of Life
Afresh annihilating me
That mightiest Belief,
I meant to have but modest needs
© Emily Dickinson
I meant to have but modest needs --
Such as Content -- and Heaven --
Within my income -- these could lie
And Life and I -- keep even --
I meant to find Her when I came --
© Emily Dickinson
I meant to find Her when I came --
Death -- had the same design --
But the Success -- was His -- it seems --
And the Surrender -- Mine --
I make His Crescent fill or lack --
© Emily Dickinson
I make His Crescent fill or lack --
His Nature is at Full
Or Quarter -- as I signify --
His Tides -- do I control --
I made slow Riches but my Gain
© Emily Dickinson
I made slow Riches but my Gain
Was steady as the Sun
And every Night, it numbered more
Than the preceding One
I lost a World -- the other day!
© Emily Dickinson
I lost a World -- the other day!
Has Anybody found?
You'll know it by the Row of Stars
Around its forehead bound.
I lived on Dread --
© Emily Dickinson
I lived on Dread --
To Those who know
The Stimulus there is
In Danger -- Other impetus
Is numb -- and Vitalless --
I live with Him -- I see His face
© Emily Dickinson
I live with Him -- I see His face --
I go no more away
For Visitor -- or Sundown --
Death's single privacy
I learned -- at least -- what Home could be --
© Emily Dickinson
I learned -- at least -- what Home could be --
How ignorant I had been
Of pretty ways of Covenant --
How awkward at the Hymn
I know where Wells grow -- Droughtless Wells
© Emily Dickinson
I know where Wells grow -- Droughtless Wells --
Deep dug -- for Summer days --
Where Mosses go no more away --
And Pebble -- safely plays --
