Jealousy

© Franklin Pierce Adams

My reason reels, my cheeks grow pale,
My heart becomes unduly spiteful,
My verses in the _Evening Mail_
Are far from snappy and delightful.
I put a civil question, Lyddy:
Is that a way to treat one's stiddy?

Curtius

© Isabella Valancy Crawford

Why, love, how darkly gaze thine eyes in mine!
If loved I dismal thoughts I well could deem
Thou sawest not the blue of my fond eyes,
But looked between the lips of that dread pit,-
O Jove! to name it seems to curse the air
With chills of death!  We'll speak not of it, Curtius.

HE that in venturous barks hath been
 A wanderer on the deep,
Can tell of many an awful scene,
 Where storms for ever sweep.

The Wanderer: A Vision: Canto IV

© Richard Savage

Still o'er my mind wild Fancy holds her sway,
Still on strange visionary land I stray.
Now scenes crowd thick! now indistinct appear!
Swift glide the months, and turn the varying year!

The Giaour: A Fragment Of A Turkish Tale

© George Gordon Byron

No breath of air to break the wave
That rolls below the Athenian's grave,
That tomb which, gleaming o'er the cliff
First greets the homeward-veering skiff
High o'er the land he saved in vain;
When shall such Hero live again?

Sonnets of the Empire: Australia 1905

© Archibald Thomas Strong

Nor shall she wake and know her danger near
Till some high heart and true, her fated lord,
Shall kiss her lips, and all her will control,
And fill her wayward heart with holy fear,
And cross her forehead with his iron sword,
And bring her strength, and armour, and a soul.

School Rhymes

© James Clerk Maxwell

O academic muse that hast for long
Charmed all the world with thy disciples’ song,
As myrtle bushes must give place to trees,
Our humbler strains can now no longer please.
Look down for once, inspire me in these lays.
In lofty verse to sing our Rector's praise.

No lame excuses can gloss over
Barge-tar clotted at the tide-line, the wrecked pier.
I should have known better.

The Last Muster

© William Henry Ogilvie

And in at the open window the lowing of cattle came -
A mob that had never a laggard and never a beast that was lame;
And wethers, a thousand thousand, and ewes with their lambs beside,
Moved over the green flats feeding, spread river to ranges wide.

So unto the man is woman,
Though she bends him, she obeys him,
Though she draws him, yet she follows,
Useless each without the other!"
