Sister M. B.’s Arrival In Montreal , 1654.

© Rosanna Eleanor Leprohon

It is now two hundred years and more
Since first set foot on Canadian shore
That saint-like heroine, fair and pure,
Prepared all things for Christ to endure;
Resigning rank and kindred ties,
And her sunny home ’neath France’s skies.

Transformation

© Wilcox Ella Wheeler

She waited in a rose-hued room;
A wanton-hearted creature she,
But beautiful and bright to see
As some great orchid just in bloom.

When It's Over

© Max Plowman

"Young soldier, what will you be At the day's end?"
"Tired's what I'll be. I shall lie on the beach
Of a shore where the rippling waves just sigh,
And listen and dream and sleep and lie
Forgetting what I've had to learn and teach
And attack and defend."

He Is Safe

© Sydney Thompson Dobell

'And it shall come to pass at eventide
There shall be light.' Lord, it hath come to pass.
As one day to the world so now to me
Thine advent. My dark eve is white as noon;
My year so sour and green is gold and red;
Mine eyes have seen Thy Goodness. All is done.

The Creation

And God stepped out on space,
And He looked around and said,

I'll make me a world."

A New Forest Ballad

© Charles Kingsley

Oh she tripped over Ocknell plain,
And down by Bradley Water;
And the fairest maid on the forest side
Was Jane, the keeper's daughter.

When Tulips Bloom

© Henry Van Dyke

When tulips bloom in Union Square,
And timid breaths of vernal air
Go wandering down the dusty town,
Like children lost in Vanity Fair;

To The One Upstairs

© Charles Simic

Boss of all bosses of the universe.
Mr. know-it-all, wheeler-dealer, wire-puller,
And whatever else you're good at.
Go ahead, shuffle your zeros tonight.
Dip in ink the comets' tails.
Staple the night with starlight.

Think'st thou to seduce me then

© Thomas Campion

Think'st thou to seduce me then with words that have no meaning?
Parrots so can learn to prate, our speech by pieces gleaning;
Nurses teach their children so about the time of weaning.

Windflowers

© Edith Nesbit

When I was little and good
I walked in the dappled wood
Where light white windflowers grew,
And hyacinths heavy and blue.

At a Pantomime. By a Bilious One

© William Schwenck Gilbert

An Actor sits in doubtful gloom,
His stock-in-trade unfurled,
In a damp funereal dressing-room
In the Theatre Royal, World.

O, Have You Blessed, Behind The Stars

© William Ernest Henley

O, have you blessed, behind the stars,
  The blue sheen of the skies,
When June the roses round her calls? –
Then do you know the light that falls
  From her beloved eyes.

The Lay of a Golden Goose

© Louisa May Alcott

Long ago in a poultry yard
One dull November morn,
Beneath a motherly soft wing
A little goose was born.

My Kingdom

© Louisa May Alcott

A little kingdom I possess
where thoughts and feelings dwell,
And very hard I find the task
of governing it well;

From The Short Story What The Swallows Did

© Louisa May Alcott

Swallow, swallow, neighbor swallow,
Starting on your autumn flight,
Pause a moment at my window,
Twitter softly your good-night;

From The Short Story Shadow-Children

© Louisa May Alcott

Little shadows, little shadows
Dancing on the chamber wall,
While I sit beside the hearthstone
Where the red flames rise and fall.
