Rose Aylmer’s Hair, Given by Her Sister

© Walter Savage Landor

BEAUTIFUL spoils! borne off from vanquish’d death!
Upon my heart’s high altar shall ye lie,
Mov’d but by only one adorer’s breath,
  Retaining youth, rewarding constancy.

Over The Water

© Wilcox Ella Wheeler

Think of it, think of it over the water
Thousands of men to-day march on to death,
Think how the sun shines on fields red with slaughter-
How the air chokes, with the cannon's hot breath.

The River's Tale

© Rudyard Kipling

Twenty bridges from Tower to Kew-
(Twenty bridges or twenty-two)-
Wanted to know what the River knew,
For they were young, and the Thames was old
And this is the tale that River told:-

Stay, gentle Stranger, softly tread!
Oh, trouble not this hallow'd heap.

Hymn - Consecration of Magnolia Cemetery

Whose was the hand that painted thee, O Death!
In the false aspect of a ruthless foe,
Despair and sorrow waiting on thy breath -
O gentle Power! who could have wronged thee so?

Aeneid

© Virgil

THE ARGUMENT.- Turnus takes advantage of AEneas's absence,
fires some of his ships (which are transformed into sea nymphs),
and assaults his camp. The Trojans, reduc'd to the last extremities,
send Nisus and Euryalus to recall AEneas; which furnishes the
poet with that admirable episode of their friendship, generosity, and
the conclusion of their adventures.

Frida And Her Poet

© Paul Hamilton Hayne

He bids a last farewell
To this world's life, again prepared to dwell
On heights celestial, in whose golden airs
The heart, at least, shall shed earth's wintry cares,
And blooming, breathe the vernal heats of Heaven.

Had ye ever a thought, lassie,
Made yer hertie sair?"

And 'still on each evening when pleasure fills up,'
At the old Goat-in-Boots, with Metheglin, each cup,
Mr Pryce, if he's there,
Will get into 'the Chair,'

'Number four—the girl who died on the table—
The girl with golden hair—'
The purpling body lies on the polished marble.
We open the throat, and lay the thyroid bare . . .

Hymn XXX: Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin?

© Charles Wesley

Where shall my wondering soul begin?
How shall I all to heaven aspire?
A slave redeemed from death and sin,
A brand plucked from eternal fire,
How shall I equal triumphs raise,
Or sing my great Deliverer's praise?

In The Pine Barrens. Sunset.

© Paul Hamilton Hayne

HARK! to the mournful wind; its burden drear
Borne over leagues of desert wild and dun,
Sinks to a weary cadence of despair,
Beyond the closing gateways of the sun.

Goblins

© Robert Laurence Binyon

The night is holy and haunted,
Asleep in a vale of June.
Stillness and earth--smell mingle
With the beams' unearthly boon.--
Yet a terror is fallen upon me
From the other side of the moon.

Barbara Allen's Cruelty

© Thomas Percy

In Scarlet towne, where I was borne,
There was a faire maid dwellin,
  Made every youth crye, wel-awaye!
  Her name was Barbara Allen.
