Consciousness Of Our Return

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Night's grating of steel on stone and splash
of water crashing from the buckets
brings back that moment in a flash;
the night burnt bright in limb's caress
and flesh yielding flesh in passions
blessed by sealed lips.

Congratulations

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Congratulations, you’ve succeeded,
you’ve acknowledged 60% of you at least
are the incredibly dense and mindless people
needed to make sense of incomprehensible

Colours in lamplight

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Colours in lamplight are previews,
scarcely eschewed as wave-length turbulence
tuned to closeness and friendship.
Colours in firelight are skin-warmed

Clouded dreams

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Tonight I’ll dream of stratus clouds and gentle rain
to drench the shroud that binds the earth in powdered
dust, rising in asthmatic puffs about our dusty feet;
and sleep I will with cirrus wings to soar above
the earthy things that strive to snare my clouded dreams.

Cherry bomb

© Ivan Donn Carswell

I said goodbye and went to bed to die;
I never knew that they had lied – was quite
surprised they didn’t seem to care, I agonised,
refused to cry although in time the tears

To A Pair Of Gloves

Jus' a little pair o' gloves,

Carbonara eyes

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Nicky said I couldn’t write, she’s got a charming
sense of social etiquette – given she’s a bitch
(the canine sort, can’t spell for shit or even write
a word) but then she has the most expressive eyes.

The New Year

© George MacDonald

Be welcome, year! with corn and sickle come;
Make poor the body, but make rich the heart:
What man that bears his sheaves, gold-nodding, home,
Will heed the paint rubbed from his groaning cart!

Cappuccino smile

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Ah, the aromas of that conversation,
the brimming, cappuccino smile
swirled in chocolate rich and cinnamoned,
the gentle coffee curlicues interlaced

Faustus And Helen

HELEN
Have I slept long? You waken me from sleep.
I have forgotten something: what is it?

Camping in a kitchen

© Ivan Donn Carswell

To say we’ve done it all before is not to bend
the truth and though we’ve lost our youth
the vision of the bright contemporary kitchen
draws us on, sustaining us beyond our strength.

Bretton Wood

© Ivan Donn Carswell

It happened by Bretton Wood (although that
wasn’t it’s real name) and I recall a clear, grey dawn
and the tall sky fallow with torpid clouds;
we went on before to watch how they sundered out

The Reply Of The Fountain

© Letitia Elizabeth Landon

HOW deep within each human heart,
A thousand treasured feelings lie;
Things precious, delicate, apart,
Too sensitive for human eye.

Blame Katrina, or Larry…

© Ivan Donn Carswell

You may have heard a dumb-ass claim that
Katrina, a hurricane, is to blame for current
stress upon our fiscal state, that petrol prices
ate their share but be aware of what the lack
of Cavendish bananas did when far too few
were found to satisfy the mad demand.

Bitter sweet

© Ivan Donn Carswell

The events
of September 11th
2001 remain bitter sweet;
as well as 2973 innocents

Beta Blogger Blues

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Have you switched to Beta yet?
It’s an even bet that if you have
you quite regret your impulse
to accept the canny invitation.

Benefit of doubt

© Ivan Donn Carswell

It’s a ruling from the field of pain (devoid of antique nave,
a judgement process aptly named ‘benefit of doubt’);
you’ve encountered it without veneer in waning times
where referees decline to rule on what is dreamed
– where benefits per se are favoured the brave.

Being old in the game

© Ivan Donn Carswell

It was a half-life that seemed like a genuine world
wielding hard symbolism over those who ruled it; we
lived vaguely in teen-easy ambivalence whilst our peers
took their chances in ordered existence, wearing

Before the arthritis set in

© Ivan Donn Carswell

It’s Wednesday, September 6th and a birthday,
again, these things arrive tediously on time
with wry regularity – and sadly, no sense
of providence or charity.

Baby waits alone

© Ivan Donn Carswell

Baby waits alone
in sandy shallows lying,
– wretchedly crying
