To Jeoffry His Cat

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.

For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily

Sunset In Autumn

© Madison Julius Cawein

Blood-coloured oaks, that stand against a sky of gold and brass;
Gaunt slopes, on which the bleak leaves glow of brier and sassafras,
And broom-sedge strips of smoky pink and pearl-gray clumps of grass,
In which, beneath the ragged sky, the rain-pools gleam like glass.

Songs Of The Imprisoned Naiad

© Paul Hamilton Hayne

"WOE! woe is me! the centuries pass away,
The mortal seasons run their ceaseless rounds,
While here I wither for the sunbright day,
Its genial sights and sounds.
Woe! woe is me!

The Marriage Of Tirzah And Ahirad

© Thomas Babbington Macaulay

Round the dark curtains of the fiery throne
Pauses awhile the voice of sacred song:
From all the angelic ranks goes forth a groan,
'How long, O Lord, how long?'
The still small voice makes answer, 'Wait and see,
Oh sons of glory, what the end shall be.'

Belitung

© Sukasah Syahdan

Majestic rocks from millions of years ancient
Bystanders of earthly silent evolution
Are in themselves untold stories
Of an ever-lasting beauty that is this beach
That the hands of time would only caress
And praises from our lips would never cease

My Heart Was Full

© Stevie Smith

My heart was full of softening showers,
I used to swing like this for hours,
I did not care for war or death,
I was glad to draw my breath.

Genesis BK V

© Caedmon

(ll. 235-236) "…Eat freely of the fruit of every other tree.
From that one tree refrain.  Beware of its fruit.  And ye shall
know no dearth of pleasant things."

To a Friend, on the Death of a Relative.

© Mather Byles

I.
Great GOD, thy Works our Wonder raise,
To thee our swelling Notes belong;
While Skies, and Winds, and Rocks, and Seas,
Around shall echo to our Song.

"I Sometimes Think"

© Thomas Hardy

I sometimes think as here I sit
Of things I have done,
Which seemed in doing not unfit
To face the sun:
Yet never a soul has paused a whit
On such-not one.

Resolution

© Sukasah Syahdan

People are still expecting this annus horribilis
to close its black box of monstrosities;
if I asked you about resolutions
you'd probably give me that look
and say "May this year fare us well."

Far Away and Long Ago

© Sukasah Syahdan

The young man replied, “You’re welcome, Ma’am, as much!” He was no less happy.

Many years later they both grew old. It just happened that life had gone on and they had never met again. In fact, the two would have entirely forgotten the episode—had they not bought a book of poetry by an Indonesian poet and found this story.

Content

© Madison Julius Cawein

When I behold how some pursue
  Fame, that is care's embodiment,
Or fortune, whose false face looks true,--
A humble home with sweet content
Is all I ask for me and you.

Mister William

© William Schwenck Gilbert

OH, listen to the tale of MISTER WILLIAM, if you please,
Whom naughty, naughty judges sent away beyond the seas.
He forged a party's will, which caused anxiety and strife,
Resulting in his getting penal servitude for life.

standing in front of a mirror
you recall it said:
to hinge upon time is self-delusion
tomorrows and days after,
longevity or ephemeron
are mere matters of illusion
