I fondly nursed an opening rose,
And view'd its beauties every day;
But ah! a withering storm arose
And swept my lovely flower away.

Careless Philosopher's Soliloquy

© Major Henry Livingston, Jr.

I rise when I please, when I please I lie down,
Nor seek, what I care not a rush for, renown;
The rattle called wealth I have learnt to despise,
Nor aim to be either important or wise.

Calligraphy of geese

Calligraphy of geese
against the sky--
the moon seals it.

Coolness

Coolness--
the sound of the bell
as it leaves the bell.

Charlie "Bird" Parker

Once Ugly Duckling,
rich plumage grew. Poised, Bird flew.
Flocks followed. Me too.

Compass Rose

I’d buy you a Babushka doll, my heart,
and brush your ash-blonde hair until it gleams,
were Russia and our land not laid apart
by ocean so much deeper than it seems.

Civilization

© Jennifer Reeser

Send your army home to their wives and children.
It is late. Your soldiers are burdened, thirsty.
Lock the doors, the windows, and here in darkness
lie down beside me.

Civic Centre (for Kathryn)

And everywhere, the audience defies
convention and conformity, some dressed
as though they had been made to improvise
at the last minute, some in black-tie best.

Crossing the Frontier

© Alec Derwent Hope

Crossing the frontier they were stopped in time,
Told, quite politely, they would have to wait:
Passports in order, nothing to declare
And surely holding hands was not a crime
Until they saw how, ranged across the gate,
All their most formidable friends were there.

Conquistador

© Alec Derwent Hope

I sing of the decline of Henry Clay
Who loved a white girl of uncommon size.
Although a small man in a little way,
He had in him some seed of enterprise.

Commination

© Alec Derwent Hope

Like John on Patmos, brooding on the Four
Last Things, I meditate the ruin of friends
Whose loss, Lord, brings this grand new curse to mind
Now send me foes worth cursing, or send more
- Since means should be proportionate to ends -
For mine are few and of the piddling kind:

Contagion

© Spike Milligan

Elephants are contagious!
Be careful how you tread.
An Elephant that's been trodden on
Should be confined to bed!
