Blazing in Gold and quenching in Purple
Leaping like Leopards to the Sky
Then at the feet of the old Horizon
Laying her spotted Face to die
Between the form of Life and Life
© Emily Dickinson
Between the form of Life and Life
The difference is as big
As Liquor at the Lip between
And Liquor in the Jug
Bee! I'm expecting you!
© Emily Dickinson
Bee! I'm expecting you!
Was saying Yesterday
To Somebody you know
That you were due --
As imperceptibly as Grief
© Emily Dickinson
As imperceptibly as Grief
The Summer lapsed away --
Too imperceptible at last
To seem like Perfidy --
Are Friends Delight or Pain?
© Emily Dickinson
Are Friends Delight or Pain?
Could Bounty but remain
Riches were good --
All but Death, can be Adjusted --
© Emily Dickinson
All but Death, can be Adjusted --
Dynasties repaired --
Systems -- settled in their Sockets --
Citadels -- dissolved --
Ah, Teneriffe!
© Emily Dickinson
Ah, Teneriffe!
Retreating Mountain!
Purples of Ages -- pause for you --
Sunset -- reviews her Sapphire Regiment --
Day -- drops you her Red Adieu!
A transport one cannot contain
© Emily Dickinson
A transport one cannot contain
May yet a transport be --
Though God forbid it lift the lid --
Unto its Ecstasy!
A poor -- torn heart -- a tattered heart
© Emily Dickinson
A poor -- torn heart -- a tattered heart --
That sat it down to rest --
Nor noticed that the Ebbing Day
Flowed silver to the West --
A Day! Help! Help! Another Day!
© Emily Dickinson
A Day! Help! Help! Another Day!
Your prayers, oh Passer by!
From such a common ball as this
Might date a Victory!
"Heavenly Father" -- take to thee
© Emily Dickinson
"Heavenly Father" -- take to thee
The supreme iniquity
Fashioned by thy candid Hand
In a moment contraband --
Within my reach!
© Emily Dickinson
Within my reach!
I could have touched!
I might have chanced that way!
Soft sauntered thro' the village --
What is -- "Paradise"
© Emily Dickinson
What is -- "Paradise" --
Who live there --
Are they "Farmers" --
Do they "hoe" --
Do they know that this is "Amherst" --
And that I -- am coming -- too --
We outgrow love, like other things
© Emily Dickinson
We outgrow love, like other things
And put it in the Drawer --
Till it an Antique fashion shows --
Like Costumes Grandsires wore.
To know just how He suffered -- would be dear --
© Emily Dickinson
To know just how He suffered -- would be dear --
To know if any Human eyes were near
To whom He could entrust His wavering gaze --
Until it settle broad -- on Paradise --
To fight aloud, is very brave
© Emily Dickinson
To fight aloud, is very brave --
But gallanter, I know
Who charge within the bosom
The Cavalry of Woe --
They might not need me -- yet they might --
© Emily Dickinson
They might not need me -- yet they might --
I'll let my Heart be just in sight --
A smile so small as mine might be
Precisely their necessity --
There's something quieter than sleep
© Emily Dickinson
There's something quieter than sleep
Within this inner room!
It wears a sprig upon its breast --
And will not tell its name.
There is no Frigate like a Book
© Emily Dickinson
There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry --
The Soul's Superior instants
© Emily Dickinson
The Soul's Superior instants
Occur to Her -- alone --
When friend -- and Earth's occasion
Have infinite withdrawn --
