Poem by Anne-Marie Derése, translated by Judith Skillman.
The waiting volcano inside us
gnaws, digs, trembles,
weighs its chances.
Distress coils up,
shrinks silent like a sick beast.
We are unrecognizable,
unique
in the certainty of our ferocity.
