Poet and travel writer. Worked variously as an insurance broker, a cricket instructor, and an English teacher in London; Architectural Review, London, assistant editor, 1930-33; United Kingdom press attache, Dublin, Ireland, 1941-42; held a post with British Admiralty, London, 1944; served in Books Department, British Council, 1944-46; appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kindom by Queen Elizabeth II, 1972-84. Member, Royal Fine Arts Commission; governor, Pusey House.
