Biography
GERALD ENGLAND was born in 1946 the son of a Yorkshire miner. He was educated at the King's School, Pontefract; Strathclyde University and Sheffield Polytechnic.
He worked as an industrial chemist in the confectionary trade and as a University technician before moving to Oldham to become an insurance agent/financial advisor.
His poetry has appeared in hundreds of magazines around the world and he has published eleven collections. Of his latest collection "LIMBO TIME", Poetry Quarterly Review wrote "his work is both personal and accessible and presents an original view of life".
He serves on the Council of the Yorkshire Dialect Society, is a member of the Pennine Poets, The British Haiku Society, The International Writers & Artists Association and the Paradoxist Movement.
He founded the magazine "Headland" in 1969 and "New Hope International" in 1980, editing and publishing a quantity of poetry magazines and collections.
After taking early retirement, he turned to the internet. His website at http://www.geraldengland.co.uk/ includes a vast collection of photographs from his various travels. New Hope International Review is one of the most extensive online source of small press poetry reviews.
He also hosts the mailing list "Haikutalk", a discussion group for haiku and related genres.
In 2006 he received the Ted Slade Award for his service to Poetry.
He lives with his wife Christine, at Gee Cross, Hyde, Cheshire, UK, on the edge of the Pennines, just outside Manchester.
